Perceptions of Racism
How do Asian Americans perceive interpersonal racism?

Even when Asian Americans experience racism, they may engage in strategies to minimize or deny its effects. Thus, a shortcoming of racial discrimination self-report measures for Asian Americans is that racism may be present, yet unrecognized.
We have analyzed 501 Asian American participants’ responses to vignettes that depict both subtle and overt racism in interpersonal situations.
Racial Socialization of Elders
How might racial consciousness be fostered and transmitted?
This is a multi-phase project. We are currently collecting data for a study about racial socialization, focusing on a bottom-up approach: how second generation Asian Americans engage their familial elders about the topic of racism.
Eventually, we hope to develop culturally congruent strategies to increase racial consciousness in Asian American families.

Awareness and Understandings of Racism in Context
Did the COVID-19 pandemic and movement for racial justice change Asian Americans' awareness of racism?
We are interested in if there were changes in Asian Americans' racial consciousness during a time of heightened anti-Asian violence and stereotyping. In this mixed method study, we examined changes in awareness of racism between 2016 and 2021. We analyzed Asian Americans' descriptions of how both the pandemic and movement for racial justice impacted their racial experiences.
