Asian American Identity & Mental Health
(AAIMH) Research Lab

AAIMH’s mission is to center Asian American voices. Our current research projects aim to promote Asian American mental health by rejecting internalized racism. We are examining perceptions of racism and how Asian Americans talk about race and racism with their elders. In doing so, we hope to develop strategies to increase racial consciousness and its transmission across generations.
Our lab embraces both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. Students are expected to engage in reflexivity throughout the research process. Reflexivity is a process of considering one’s own positionality–experiences and areas of identity–related to a research project. It involves explicit acknowledgement of how one’s social locations could affect all parts of the research process from conceptualization to design to data collection to interpretation to dissemination.
While specific research assistant (RA) tasks and projects will vary person-to-person, examples of RA experiences in this lab include: review of extant literature and compilation of annotated bibliographies; discussion of articles; data collection; data entry, management, and documentation; statistical data analysis; qualitative analysis; audit of qualitative analysis; utilization of data analysis software (e.g., SPSS, NVivo); study conceptualization; submission of an IRB; proposal writing for conferences; presentation of research; and manuscript preparation.
